Safety At SunFest Is Large Priority For Local Law Enforcement

SunFest Safety

CBS 12 -

The West Palm Beach Police Department is calling it a sign of the times.

Global events, large crowds and terrorist attacks, especially using vehicles.

That’s why law enforcement here have put water barricades blocking entrances into SunFest. It’s just one of many safety features in place.

“Water barricades prevent the 'bulldozing," said Sgt. David LeFont of West Palm Beach Police. “Those barricades are put at all the gates to keep everyone safe that are inside the event and prevent that from happening.”

When it comes to security, West Palm Beach police says it's a top priority and they are ready.

Cameras are everywhere, mounted on street poles, building rooftops, drones will be in the air and boats patrolling the Intracoastal -- and there is more.

“We have people in plain clothes and people in uniform” LeFont said.

Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter police have also been added to the mix, both uniformed and undercover officers. SWAT teams are also on standby, a mobile command center and fire/rescue will be on the event property.

“You should always be able to stand at SunFest and from anywhere and you should be visibly able to see police officers” LeFont said.

West Palm Beach police would not tell the exact number of officers from all three agencies working the four-day event or the safety protocol in effect.
