10 Pennies Sell For $1.1 Million
Who says a penny isn't worth what it used to be?
Ten U.S. pennies minted in 1909 have fetched more than $1.1 million at a California auction, according to GreatCollections. "The 10 pennies were specially struck proof coins made for collectors by the United States Mint in Philadelphia in the early years of the Lincoln cents," reads a statement from the GreatCollections auction house. "All are still in pristine, mint red condition and sold for a combined total of $1,113,174."
One of the coins, which featured the initials of designer Victor D. Brenner, sold for $365,625, the auction house reports. The initials appeared on the first batch of 1909 pennies, but was dropped in later pressings. The coin sold over the weekend is considered "the finest known surviving example" of the coin, according to GreatCollections.
