STUDY: Mammals Can Breathe Through Their Butts

A new study in Japan has discovered that mammals can breathe through their butts.

Certain types of fish can absorb oxygen through their intestines to stay alive in emergencies which made scientists curious if mammals could do it too.

The Japanese scientists found that during certain emergency situations, mice, rats, and pigs were able to breathe through their butts.

The researchers gave rats oxygen-rich enemas to see if their butts absorbed it and their blood-oxygen levels increased.

The scientists haven't tried this on humans yet but they believe it will work the same way.

This study could lead to new emergency treatments when ventilators are not available or inadequate.
